Prof Paul Iji

Dr Paul Iji is a Professor of Animal Science at the University of New England (UNE), Armidale, Australia. He studied in Australia (PhD and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education), Scotland (MSc) and Nigeria (BSc Honours, First Class). He has been involved in research and tertiary teaching since 1987, working first in Nigeria, then South Africa and currently Australia. Prof Iji’s main area of research is poultry nutrition, with specialization in gastrointestinal physiology although he has previously been involved in research and teaching on other animal species, including sheep, goats, pigs, cattle and ostrich. He has graduated more than 30 PhD, Masters and Honours students and currently supervises other PhD students, at various stages of their programmes.
He has also supervised a number of post-doctoral research fellows and hosted research visitors in his group. To date, Prof Iji has secured research funding of over $3.62m and supervised students and research visitors from scholarships and bursaries worth $2.12m. He has undertaken some administrative roles, including being Postgraduate Coordinator of a large School at the UNE for two years. He serves on a number of University committees and is a consultant to the poultry and feed industries. He has examined more than 40 PhD and MSc theses from across the world. Prof Iji is also a project and personnel evaluator for national research programmes in a number of countries, and serves on the editorial board of many scientific journals. He has published close to 300 book chapters, journal and conference papers, including more than 25 invited presentations.

Prof Dennis Umesiobi, Bloemfontein, South Africa

Dr Dennis O. Umesiobi is a Professor in Animal Reproductive Physiology. He has served as the Head of Department and Acting Dean of faculty at the Central University of Technology, Free State, South Africa. Professor Umesiobi is a South African National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher. He studied in Nigeria and South Africa, and has over 20 years of teaching experience at the tertiary level of training as well as over 25 years of industry experience. Prior to his appointment at the Central University of Technology, Free State, South Africa, he worked in several academic positions in universities in Nigeria and South Africa. Professor Umesiobi’s main research interests are in animal reproduction biotechnologies, with specialization in reproductive physiology. He has supervised/currently supervises several postgraduate students. His publication record includes over 30 publications in peer-reviewed accredited journals, two books and two book chapters. He has also made more than 40 scientific papers presentations at international and local conferences, as well as technical contributions for industry. Professor Umesiobi is a member of several professional societies and an Associate Editor of four scientific journals, and also reviews articles for many other animal science journals. He obtained the Vice Chancellor’s Established Researcher Award of the Central University of Technology, Free State, South Africa. He has also obtained Study Visit Awards to several universities in UK, Canada, USA, Australia, amongst others. Professor Umesiobi was instrumental to the development of many collaborations among individuals and institutions in the Southern African Development Countries (SADC) region. He also established an ongoing links and collaborations with international colleagues and institutions.

Prof Ignatius Nsahlai, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Prof Ignatius Nsahlai holds BSc and Maîtres degrees from the University of Yaounde (Cameroon), and PG Diploma and PhD from the University of Reading, UK. He was appointed Postdoctoral Research Fellow and later Associate Scientist at the International Livestock Research Institute, Ethiopia, where he researched into alternative supplementation strategies for improving the productivity of ruminant livestock in smallholder production systems. Prof Nsahlai later joined the University of Natal (now KwuZulu-Natal) in July, 1996, where he rose from the position of Senior Lecturer to Professor in Animal Science. His areas of specialization are feeds and feeding, digestive physiology and ruminant nutrition. Prof Nsahlai has also veered towards modeling the availability of nutrients in feedstuffs to ruminant livestock, and use of phytobiotics to control gastro-intestinal parasites. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and presented at local and international conferences.

Dr Chayane da Rocha, Univerdade Federal do Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil

Dr Chayane da Rocha is a Professor of Animal Science at the Univerdade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), Curitiba, Brazil. She studied in Brazil (PhD, MSc and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education). Prof Rocha’s main area of research is poultry nutrition, with specialization in gastrointestinal physiology. She has recently been involved in teaching and research into avian in ovo nutrition and nutrition of wild animals. She regularly reviews for scientific journals involving poultry production. Prof Rocha has published close to 100 journal and conference papers. Prof Rocha’s career goals are to contribute to the development of the poultry industry and wild animal nutrition through direct conduct of research, research management and researcher training.

Prof Yinka Odunsi, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Nigeria.

Prof Adeyinka Odunsi is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (FNIAS) and Postgraduate College of Animal Science, Nigeria (FCASN), a Registered Animal Scientist (RAS) and Professor of Animal Science at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Nigeria. He obtained his PhD from the premier University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. He has been involved in the teaching of various courses in the field of animal production, products, management, nutrition and biotechnology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels since 1989. His research interests include investigations on tropical and under-utilised alternative feed resources, eggs and hatchery science, quality standards in non-ruminant animal nutrition and products, enzyme and phytogenic feed additives, and climate-nutrition studies. He has also made modest contributions to Japanese quail development in Nigeria. He is a mentor and supervisor to junior academics, undergraduate and graduate students at various stages of their programmes. Prof Odunsi is a journal reviewer and external examiner to various professional agencies, universities and other higher educational bodies in Nigeria and overseas. He has published extensively in the field of Animal Science and collaborates very well with other researchers. Administratively, Prof Odunsi has served as Head of Department of Animal Production & Health, Director of Academic Planning and Dean of Faculty of Agricultural Science, LAUTECH Ogbomoso, among others. Currently he is the President, World Poultry Science Association, Nigeria Branch (WPSA-NB); Vice President, Association of Deans of Faculties of Agriculture in Nigerian Universities (ADAN) and South-west Coordinator, Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN).

Dr Siaka Diarra, University of the South Pacific, Alafua, Samoa

Dr Siaka Seriba Diarra’s career in teaching started soon after obtaining his BSc in animal husbandry) from the Institute of Rural Polytechnique, Mali. Dr Diarra realized that in order to excel in teaching he needed postgraduate qualifications. This took him to Nigeria, where he studied English language and combined teaching in colleges of agriculture with postgraduate studies. He obtained the MSc in animal production and management from University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, Postgraduate Diploma (Education) from the National Teachers Institute, Nigeria, and PhD in non-ruminant animal nutrition from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Nigeria. After a short stint at as Lecturer at the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, Dr Diarra took up appointment at the University of the South Pacific as Senior Lecturer in Animal Science in August, 2012 to date. In addition to teaching and research Diarra has served in several administrative positions: as Head of Department, Faculty Board representative, Chair of Staff Development Committee and Managing Editor of journals and currently a regional livestock/poultry consultant with FAO. Dr Diarra’s research interest is in alternative feed resources for non-ruminant animals, securing over US$ 40,000.00 research grant in this area. He has authored more than over 60 publications in alternative feed resources and welfare issues (poultry, rabbit and swine) in peer-reviewed journals. He has also reviewed over 80 manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. He has supervised over 100 undergraduate final year projects as well as Masters and PhD students. Diarra fluently speaks Bambara, French, English and Hausa languages.

Dr Bunmi Malau-Aduli, James Cook University, Townsville, Australia.

Dr Bunmi Malau-Aduli Dr Bunmi S. Malau-Aduli is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Education and Academic Lead for Assessment and Evaluation and at the College of Medicine and Dentistry, James Cook University. She earned her PhD in Animal Reproductive Physiology. Her educational training and qualifications span across biological sciences, agricultural science, business administration, management and medical education. Her current research interests include assessment and evaluation in the health professions; quality assurance processes in assessment; curriculum design; cultural competence for life-long learning and work in a globalised society; and impact of genetics-nutrition interaction of dietary omega-3 enriched oils on reproductive performance, meat and milk quality of ruminant livestock. Dr Malau-Aduli also holds an Adjunct Senior Researcher position in the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology at the University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia. She is involved in teaching into the undergraduate and postgraduate medical programmes and she supervises PhD, Masters and Honours students. Dr Malau-Aduli has won teaching merit awards and research grants at institutional and national levels.

Prof Timothy Gondwe, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Lilongwe, Malawi

Professor Timothy Gondwe obtained his PhD in tropical animal breeding and husbandry from Georg-August University of Goettingen, Germany and conducted research into the genetic development and feed management of local chickens. Prof Gondwe has been with Bunda College of Agriculture/Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) since 1996, involved with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in several areas , including applied animal breeding, quantitative genetics, biometry and computing, among other subjects. Prof Gondwe has been Campus Principal, Head of Department and Deputy Dean at LUANAR, where he conducts research and outreach activities on dairy, village poultry, goats and pig production and breeding. He played a key role in designing and implementing a Bunda Dairy Outreach innovation in communities that surround Bunda Campus. He is now testing an outreach innovation on commercialising smallholder poultry production and community-based breeding programs in goats. He has supervised several under- and post-graduate students’ research and has been external examiner to a number of universities in Africa. Prof Gondwe’s current area of interest is to develop locally adaptable breeds or composites, targeting village chickens and goats, and enhancing animal recording to guide livestock management and breeding. He has participated in various international training of trainers’ courses on research methods, data flow, data management and analyses. He has also organised and facilitated various local training courses on research methods to students and scientists. He assisted in local organisation and coordination of e-Research methods course for PhD students facilitated by University of Reading. He is a member of several professional organizations and won has won several local and internationally funded research and outreach projects, including those in partnership with Scottish Agriculture College, UK. Currently Prof Gondwe is Vice-Chair of a taskforce on developing an animal breeding policy for Malawi, having previously chaired a similar taskforce.

Dr A.V. Elangovan, National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, Bangalore, India

Dr A. V. Elangovan started his career as Assistant Professor, Animal Nutrition Department of Veterinary College, Mathura, India. He was actively engaged in teaching and research of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Dr Elangovan then took up appointment at Central Avian Research Institute, Izatnagar, He is currently Principal Scientist at the National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, Bangalore, India. Dr Elangovan was awarded the Dr N.D. Kehar award for his PhD research into quail nutrition, and has also received the Australian government Endeavour Fellowship award. He has researched extensively into alternate protein sources for quail feeding, nutrient requirements, feed additives, alternate feed (energy and protein) resources for poultry, phytase supplementation in broiler and layer chicken and early nutrition in broiler chicken. He has also developed software for feed formulation and published more than 100 articles in reputable national and international journals.

Dr Sulaiman Depamede, Universitas Mataram, Mataram, Indonesia

Dr Sulaiman Depamede is a Professor of Animal Biotechnology at the University of Mataram, Indonesia. He is a graduate of The University of Adelaide, Australia. Prof Depamede is skilled in several areas, including reproductive immunology, animal anatomy and physiology, molecular biotechnology and cell biology. He has published extensively in international journals, has graduated several PhD students and collaborates with researchers in New Zealand and other parts of the world.

Dr Doaa Ibrahim, Zagzig University, Zagazig, Egypt

Dr Doaa Ibrahim is an Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition at Zagazig University, Egypt. She obtained the Bachelor of Veterinary Medical Sciences, Master of Veterinary Science and PhD degrees in veterinary sciences from Zagazig University, following which she accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University, USA. She has been involved in research and teaching since 2007. Dr Ibrahim’s main areas of research are fish, poultry and ruminant nutrition. Her professional skills include ration formulation for farm and laboratory animals, feed processing and improvement of low-nutritional value feed. Dr Ibrahim has graduated some Masters students, and participated in teaching of veterinary professionals and school teachers working in agriculture. Dr Ibrahim has begun to publish rapidly and will excel in this into the future.

Dr Janak Vidanaracchi, University of Peradineya, Peradineya, Sri Lanka

Dr Janak Vidanarachchi is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Science, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. He studied in Sri Lanka, Canada and Australia, obtaining his PhD from the University of New England, Australia. He was also visiting scientist at Swedish University of Agricultural Science (SLU), Sweden and has on-going collaboration with Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Dr Vidanarachchi has published twelve book chapters He has skills in many areas of the nutrition laboratory, including gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, intestinal microbiology, multi-angle laser light scattering (SEC-MALLS), thin-layer chromatography (TLC), bomb calorimetry, histomorphology, enumeration of aerobic & anaerobic bacteria, gene sequencing, amino acid analysis, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, among others.

Prof Feng Gao, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing, China

Prof Feng Gao is a Professor at the College of Animal Science and Technology, Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU), Nanjing, China. He obtained his degrees from this same University and has been involved in research and tertiary teaching since 1993. Prof Gao’s main area of research is animal nutrition and feed Science, with specialization in animal nutrition regulation, mainly involved in research on poultry and pigs. He has graduated 10 PhD and 40 Masters Students. To date, Prof Gao has completed more than 10 funded research projects, supported by a number of national agencies. He also heads key research agencies for Jiangsu Province of Prof Gao has published close to 200 journal and conference papers, including more than 50 SCI-rated papers

Prof Rommel Sulabo, University of the Philippines, Laguna, Philippines

Dr Rommel Sulabo is a Professor of Animal Science in the area of non-ruminant nutrition at the University of the Philippines, Los Banos. He is also into feed processing and safety, and animal growth modeling. Prof Sulabo obtained his MS and PhD from South Dakota State University and Kansas State University, USA, respectively. He is currently the Head of the Animal Nutrition Group in his University. Prof Sulabo has published extensively and received a number of local and international awards, particularly for his research into pig nutrition.

Dr Mir Darioush Shakouri, University of Mohaghegh Ardabili, Ardabil, Iran

Dr Mir Daryoush Shakouri is an Associate Professor of Animal Science at the University of Mohaghegh Ardabili, Ardabil, Iran. He studied in Iran and was a visiting research student at the University of New England, Australia in 2005. His main focus is on feed additives, especially those of plant origin, and energy sources in poultry nutrition. Dr Shakouri supervises a number of MSc and PhD students working in these areas.

Prof Nasir Elseed, University of Khatoum, Khartoum, Sudan

Dr Abdel Nasir Mohammed Ahmed Fadel Elseed is a Professor of Animal Science at the University of Khartoum, Sudan. He obtained his PhD in ruminant nutrition from Yamaguchi University, Japan. Prof Elseed joined the University of Khartoum in 1996, where he has risen to the position of Head of Department and now Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Animal Production. He has received several local and international awards and has published in several high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

Prof Joseph Baloyi, University of Venda, Thohoyandou, South Africa

Dr Joseph Baloyi is an Associate Professor of Animal Science at the University of Venda, South Africa, where he is currently an academic Head of Department. He studied in Zimbabwe and Scotland and previously worked in Zimbabwe. His area of research interest is ruminant animal nutrition. Prof Baloyi has graduated a large number of postgraduate students and continues to supervise PhD, MSc and Honours students. He has published extensively in international journals and presented a large number of papers at local and international conferences.

Dr Dachung Dung

Dr Dachung Dung is a Principal Research Fellow/Reader and Programme Leader at the National Animal Production Research Institute, Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria. He studied in Nigeria and Australia. His main areas of research are pasture agronomy and ruminant animal nutrition. Dr Dung has published in international journals and presented at local and international conferences.

Dr Tofuko Woyengo

Dr Tofuko Woyengo is an Assistant Professor of Animal Science at South Dakota State University. He was educated at the University of Nairobi, Kenya and University of Manitoba, Canada. His main area of research is non-ruminant animal nutrition, including companion animal nutrition.
